Family-Whanau Support

A fieldworker can assist you in acknowledging and understanding mental illness in a family member or friend. The fieldworker can provide support, advocacy, education, access to support groups and community education. The fieldworker can arrange to meet with you, your family, whanau or friends at a suitable venue of your choice.

Advocacy

The fieldworker can support you during your appointments with health professionals and government agencies, and if necessary, will assist you in the development of a support plan.

Education

The fieldworker can provide you, your family, whanau and friends with up-to-date education on mental illness, mental health, recovery, self-care, problem solving, care and crisis management, the Privacy Act and Mental Health Acts, consumer rights, family rights and any other related subjects.

The latest research into mental illness can be accessed via on-site internet and the fieldworker can assist this. Advice regarding relevant courses, training and workshops that may assist you in better understanding mental illness is also available.

Support Groups

Support groups for family, whanau and carers meet monthly where there is the opportunity to join others who are experiencing similar situations. These support groups promote peer support and social networking.

Community Education

If your community group, organisation or school would like to learn more about mental health issues, the fieldworker can provide education tailored to meet your requirements. Education for groups can be arranged outside of normal working hours. Another facet of community education is for the fieldworker to take an active role in mental health promotion, to help reduce stigma and discrimination.

Referrals

Referrals may be made through medical practitioners, Wairarapa Hospital, social service organisations and self-referral.
